Mrs Brissite been Honored
Honoring Mrs. Eletha Brissett

Ms. Eletha Brissett’s 36 plus years journey in education began in the small, picturesque district of Mt. Peto, Hanover, where she was born. She attended Mt. Peto Primary School and later pursued her passion for teaching at the prestigious Bethlehem Teachers’ College in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. In 1960, Ms. Brissett embarked on what would become an illustrious teaching career at Haddo Primary School.

Her love for teaching was evident from a young age, as she often played “school” with her siblings, instilling in her the foundation of what would later become her lifelong calling. Throughout her career, Ms. Brissett demonstrated remarkable dedication and compassion, touching the lives of countless students.

One of her most cherished moments came when the then-principal of Haddo Primary brought a young man to her, with a simple request: “If nothing else, teach him to write his name.” To the principal’s amazement, not only did the young man learn to write his name, but under Ms. Brissett’s guidance, he also began reading. This achievement stands as a testament to her patience, skill, and belief in the potential of every student.

Ms. Brissett, now retired, resides in Haddo. Her legacy, however, continues to shine in the hearts of her former students and colleagues. On December 27, 2024, we have the distinct honor of celebrating a life dedicated to education, a legacy of love, and a teacher who has shaped futures with care and compassion.

Honoring Ms. Ileen Leslie

Miss Ileen Leslie, a cherished educator and beloved community figure, was born in Haddo, Westmoreland. She began her educational journey at the very school she would later dedicate her career to—the Haddo Primary and Infant School, formerly known as the Haddo All-Age School. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Fair View High School and subsequently to Sam Sharpe Teachers College in St. James. She further pursued her passion for music education at the prestigious Jamaica School of Music, now the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica.

Miss Leslie’s path to teaching was serendipitous. As a proud past student of Haddo, she was personally invited by the school’s then-Principal, Mr. Young, to take up the noble calling. Teaching chose her, and it was a perfect match. She began her teaching career at Haddo Primary and Infant School in 1972, where she served with unwavering dedication until her retirement in 1990.

While at Haddo, Miss Leslie gained extensive experience teaching in most of the primary grades as well as in the infant department. She also had the privilege of preparing students for the Common Entrance Exam, playing an instrumental role in their academic success. Her commitment to education did not stop there; she later earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the International University of the Caribbean, further enriching her ability to guide and nurture students.

Throughout her tenure, Miss Leslie touched countless lives with her kindness, wisdom, and creativity. One of her fondest memories is her role as a Cub Scout leader. Alongside Mrs. Pinnock, she embraced the trust of parents who allowed them to take their sons on camping adventures. These experiences were not only enriching for the students but also a testament to Miss Leslie’s commitment to holistic education and community engagement.

Miss Leslie’s legacy is one of passion, service, and deep connection to her roots. Her life and work remain a source of inspiration, embodying the transformative power of education. Today, we honor her remarkable contributions to the Haddo community and beyond.
